in her journal dated november 20, 1983, hrh the princess wrote: “i was reading the legend of condor heroes book 10, which was the finale, ep. 3 and got a call from than puying maneerat saying that she would like to see me in the morning. i waited but she didn’t show up so i went to the bathroom and painted a picture about a chinese poem depicting the difficulty of farmers. i smeared the picture with red. in the exhibition catalog to honor hrh the princess, she described this painting: an ancient chinese poem in tang dynasty portrays the suffering of farmers that even though they could grow a lot of rice, they were still starving. the farmers worked the land in the heat of the scorching sun. who would imagine each grain of rice came from the farmers’ anguish? (it is similar to a thai song, “a morsel of rice.”) i used the red paint to represent the scorching sun. the painting looks apprehensive to me. i am not keen on drawing a person so the farmers do not look very much like humans.
