in her journal dated february 19, 1984, hrh the princess wrote, “i painted another picture of the forest, but it didn’t come out right. i think it is a nice picture, though.” she was satisfied with this painting although it was not her initial design. at first, she planned to paint a pile of logs. she criticized her own work that “there were several layers of oil paints in the background. as i couldn’t quite understand the technique of oil painting, i ended up smudging the colors and it didn’t look like a pile of logs.” therefore, she imagined “it was a mere mud road and gave up on logs.” the forest at chan temple is in mae chaem district, chiang mai province. it is the pine forest. there were piles of logs there. hill tribes people informed hrh the princess that they had found a lot of logs cut down and left unattended. so she went there. it turned out that the logs were dragged up from the dam; otherwise, they would have been rotten in the water.
