in the exhibition catalog in honor of hrh the princess organized by the fine arts department in 1984, she described this painting: i read a chinese poem of the tang dynasty comparing ‘a poem to a colorless picture and a picture to a soundless poem.’ so i tried to make an oil painting. the poem refers to a boating in an early morning with clouds of different colors. all the way through a thousand gorges, there were noises of the monkeys. i showed the finished picture to my friends who suggested i change the title of the picture to monkeys watching a boat.
